Today, Apple opened a new store in New York City. The building was a bank in the 1920s. Apple tried their best to restore the original structure, but it as a mess. Instead, they did a great job replicating it.
The store is beautiful. It’s the first Apple store to have a Beats headphones listening station, many of which were receiving their wireless feed from the iPod sitting beneath. The audio was choppy, but I guess that’s to be expected with the amount of traffic in the store today.
In addition, it’s the first store to have pull out iPhone case drawers, reminiscent of bank safe deposit boxes.
Last, but not least, it’s the first Apple Store we’ve been to where there’s a public bathroom.
Apple’s Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores, Angela Ahrendts, and other retail execs were on-hand observing. Most people probably didn’t recognize her. Of course, we did.
Typically, Apple gives t-shirts to the first 5000 people that enter, which has the name of the store on it. No shirts this time. Instead, visitors received “Portraits of the Upper East Side” a great book of photos taken around the Upper East Side, using an iPhone 6.
